Should You Bring Your Kids to See 'War Horse'?

Steven Spielberg's new film, 'War Horse,' is racking up the accolades and being touted as a movie for the whole family. But given its subject matter -- a boy gives up his beloved horse Joey to the war effort -- is it really okay for small children? The movie is rated PG-13 for "intense sequences of war violence," but that warning from the MPAA doesn't begin to cover the trauma that Joey (not to mention several humans) undergoes. SPOILERS ahead. 1. Heartbreaking goodbyes. Albert (Jeremy Irvine) is forced to sell his horse, Joey, to a soldier headed for the front, but that's just the beginning of a series of wrenching farewells as Joey is handed off from owner to owner, each of whom forms an instant bond with the noble creature. 2. Violence. This is a war film and there are several battle sequences, one of them so intense it might have been taken out of Spielberg's R-rated opus 'Saving Private Ryan.' There are no exploding limbs or extreme gore, but several characters we've grown attached to do meet their demise. 3. Human deaths. Speaking of deaths, the human death toll is mostly rendered off-screen (a companion-in-arms is engulfed by gas, a letter arrives to tell of the death of another), but the war definitely takes its toll. Even younger characters aren't spared, although their deaths are conveyed with some discretion. 4. Animal deaths. We won't spoil you as to whether Joey lives or dies, but he does endure some of the most extreme trauma any screen animal has ever had to suffer. In perhaps the most traumatic, a panic-stricken Joey is entangled in barbed wire and unable to free himself. Bizarrely, this horrific scene leads to a lighthearted exchange in which two soldiers from opposing armies work together to free him. You could argue what's more upsetting: Shots of the bodies of dozens of horses littered on the battlefield or when a soldier is ordered to put Joey out of his misery by shooting him in the head. One prolonged animal death in particular will have you sobbing your eyes out. Bottom line: Even though the film does have its soaring, inspirational moments and lots of glorious horse scenes, it's far too violent and intense for young children. Our advice: Don't bring anyone under 12. [Photo: Disney] The Best Movies of 2011 The Best Movies of 201150. 'Breaking Dawn'49. 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon'48. 'The Trip'47. 'Warrior'46. 'Warrior' on DVD: 8 Reasons You Have To Watch the most effective Movie You didn't Look At This Year

Ultimately, possibly you can test 'Warrior' since the canary inside the coal mine for 2011. The very examined fighting drama about two estranged brothers and sisters, their alcoholic father and ultimate fighting will be a major box-office disappointment upon its release in September, but knowing from how a last three several days have carried out out, that was just componen for your coming course. Movie attendance this season is off by four percent from a year ago, and -- despite some levels this summer season ('Harry Potter,' 'Bridesmaids,' 'Transformers') -- a lot of the fall schedule was undercooked financially ('The Muppets,' 'Sherlock Holmes,' 'New Year's Eve'). In the event you overlooked 'Warrior' like numerous others, however, there's some hope: the film is going on DVD and Blu-ray now, meaning you'll be able to become popular what's the best film you didn't look at this year. Ahead, 8 reasons why you ought to give 'Warrior' an chance within the convenience of your couch. You'll be able to really understand Tom Sturdy for the reason that one! Even Bane confirms. Right, Bane? "Efafsssf asqqqqs fsffsafnnn increases!" Kidding aside, Tom Sturdy is actually good in 'Warrior,' he probably warrants an Oscar nomination ... As Tommy Riordan, a wrestling prodigy who becomes a broken war hero getting a secret, Sturdy is heartbreaking, stoic, visceral and basically fit enough to tear Bane's arms off and beat him unconscious together. Also: tats! ... this is also true Nick Nolte As Tommy and Brendan's (Joel Edgerton) father, Nolte gives among people career-capping performances have a tendency to draw the nice cozy glow of Oscar. Sadly, he completed this performance when Christopher Plummer, Albert Brooks and Max Von Sydow all did similar victory-lap work this year in 'Beginners,' 'Drive' and 'Extremely Noisy and very Close,' correspondingly. Will Nolte get forgotten when the Academy awards nominations are introduced? Hopefully his SAG nom bodes well for a lot of recognition. Joel Edgerton doesn't deserve an Oscar nomination, but he's still excellent. Consider Edgerton -- who was simply poised to experience a breakout 2011 until both 'Warrior' and 'The Thing' were D.O.A. -- since the engine in 'Warrior.' Without his Brendan, an excellent guy pressed to extremes to be able to save his family, 'Warrior' wouldn't run additionally into it will. He's the everyman you root when ever faced with overwhelming negative odds. You'll find two tunes with the National in 'Warrior'! Regardless if you are a bearded hipster or just someone who likes their lead entertainers to own killer baritones, hearing The Country's in 'Warrior' forces you to smile and/or cry. ("Start a War" opens the film "About Today" shuts it.) Frank Grillo offers the most underrated character actor performance of 2011 Become accustomed to seeing Frank Grillo next season. The veteran NY actor (which has came out on from 'Blue Bloods' to 'CSI: NY' to 'Breakout Kings' on television) steals his moments in 'Warrior' as Brendan's trainer, and comes in surprisingly than four films in 2012: 'The Grey,' 'Disconnect,' 'Lay the Favorite' and 'Gangster Squad,' opposite Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling. Very good! He's as being a Palookaville version of R-Gos! 'Warrior' forces you to cry Serious the best showdown between Tommy and Brendan might reduce you to definitely certainly a weeping, blubbering mess. Sure, 'War Horse' and 'We Bought a Zoo' -- in addition to 'The Artist' -- have emotional moments, but nothing quite comes even close to the showing of brotherly love within the finish of 'Warrior.' Managed to get happen just get dusty in Moviefone HQ? It's just good 2011 is really a year of "good, but" 'Warrior is just good good. 'Ghost Protocol,' 'Dragon Tattoo' lead holiday frame

'Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol''The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo''We Bought a Zoo'Paramount's "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" and Sony's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" are expected to lead a crammed holiday frame, with four other wide releases launching between Wednesday and Christmas Day.While the B.O. is in need of holiday cheer, observers predict soft results on Friday and Saturday, as Christmas Eve historically is a moviegoing dead zone. That's why both "Ghost Protocol" and "Dragon Tattoo," along with Par's 3D motion-capture toon "The Adventures of Tintin," debut nationwide Wednesday to fatten up opening totals. In fact, Sony decided to get an even bigger headstart, bowing "Dragon Tattoo" today in most Stateside locations, starting at 7 p.m.Fox's Cameron Crowe family pic "We Bought a Zoo" opens Friday, followed by Disney-DreamWorks' "War Horse" and Summit's sci-fier "The Darkest Hour" on Christmas Day.In 2005 -- the last time Christmas Eve fell on a Saturday -- five films opened wide over the long weekend, though only three bowed at more than 2,000 locations. Holdovers "King Kong" and "The Chronicles of Narnia" jockeyed for top ranking that weekend, with six-day grosses at just north of $40 million. This time around, pundits expect a similarly close race in the $40 millions between "Ghost Protocol" and "Dragon Tattoo," from Wednesday to Monday.Specialty cinemas are also crowded with a mix of debuts and expansions. The Weinstein Co.'s "The Artist" and "My Week With Marilyn" widen significantly, while Angelina Jolie's "In the Land of Blood and Honey," from FilmDistrict, and Warner Bros.' "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" bow in limited release."The Artist," which has cumed $1.4 million domestically as of Dec. 19, adds almost 150 playdates; "Marilyn," with $6.2 million so far, more than doubles its theater count to approximately 600 Stateside runs.Overseas, "Ghost Protocol" should have another solid weekend, after debuting at $69.5 million from about 70% of territories. Pic bows this weekend in 10 new markets, including Brazil and Mexico.Last weekend, Par partnered with Imax and other large-format theaters to bow "Ghost Protocol" exclusively at 425 locations, totaling an impressive $12.8 million domestically, of which $10.5 million came from Imax. The week-early bow should affect the film's perf this weekend, as it expands to more than 3,400 locations. That's because some fanboy auds likely saw the film last weekend, though Par hopes the early launch will boost word-of-mouth.Both "Ghost Protocol" and "Dragon Tattoo" target two of the most avid holiday auds -- adults and action fans (Daily Variety, Nov. 22, 2011).Sony has sold David Fincher's "Dragon Tattoo" -- which should draw auds from fans of the bestselling book trilogy -- as hardcore adult counterprogramming, even going so far as to describe the film as "the feel-bad movie of Christmas."Entering a crowded family market, "The Adventures of Tintin" (Par is handling North American rights) should land somewhere in the high-$20 millions in six days, according to B.O. watchers. Par launched the film two weeks ago in Quebec and plans to incorporate Canadian grosses into the film's U.S. opening tally as previews. But the toon's domestic perf is mostly gravy, since "Tintin" already has cumed $237 million internationally after eight weeks. Par and Sony have divvied up worldwide distrib rights on "Tintin"; both studios will evenly split the global pot.As to the weekend's remaining wide release, Matt Damon starrer "We Bought a Zoo" is expected to hit at around $15 million through Monday, competing in an already-crowded family market. "War Horse" -- Steven Spielberg's second pic this weekend including "Tintin" -- is expected to gross $6 million in two days, and "The Darkest Hour," between $4 million and $5 million.Christmas Day won't see much biz until around mid-afternoon, when observers expect turnstiles to really start spinning. Increased theater traffic should continue throughout next week.Holiday holdovers, meanwhile, led by Warner's "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" and Fox's "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked," also look to benefit from vacation crowds next week. "Sherlock Holmes" has cumed $44.6 million as of Monday; "Alvin," nearly $26 million. Contact Andrew Stewart at andrew.stewart@variety.com

Chuck star Zachary Levi may be the latest celebrity to host Spike TV's Gaming Honours show, which is broadcast survive December 10 at 8pm ET from La. Levi, who's finishing the ultimate season of Chuck, follows within the actions of famous players like Jack Black and Samuel L. Jackson as host from the event.our editor recommends'Chuck' Star Zachary Levi to Host Spike TV's Gaming Honours (Exclusive)'Chuck's' Vik Sahay Systems on Lester: 'Don't Determine If I'll Ever Have the Same Singing Again' Mark Burnett (Survivor), executive producer of the year's ceremony, arrived at to Levi to create a players' sensibility towards the show. The actor discusses the emergence of game titles being an talent and the way forward for interactive entertainment within this exclusive interview. PHOTOS: 10 Broadcast and Cable Television Show Most Viewed By Males The Hollywood Reporter: Why did you choose to host the 2011 VGAs? Zachary Levi: I wish to pay homage and tribute to any or all the designers and gaming firms that have ongoing to mold my very own existence and my entertainment. THR: What role will celebs participate in the VGAs this season? Levi: Personally, i don't would like it to be an honours show where it's nearly putting celebs inside for celebrities' sake. I am wishing the celebs which i get are those who have some type of legitimate love or participation on the planet of gaming, when i do. That's a minimum of where I get up on it. "It may ultimately possess a resonance along with a weight that a few of the various other, I guess, exclusive honours shows have finally.Inch THR: Would you believe the VGAs will ultimately become for games exactly what the Oscars or Emmys are for film and tv? Levi: In my opinion when the VGAs continue doing right through the gaming community, be in keeping with it, focus on players, and also have that awesome, fun, atmosphere, but respect for that genre itself, they will just still gain respect being an honours show. It may ultimately possess a resonance along with a weight that a few of the various other, I guess, exclusive honours shows have finally. THR: How can you begin to see the VGAs evaluating with other honours shows you have been associated with? Levi: A variety of it is simply patting one another around the back, regardless of the market is, be it the Emmys, the Academy awards, or even the Gaming Honours. I believe probably the most essential things is the fact that it's entertaining, fun, and pays tribute to individuals which have been ongoing to guide the charge in whatever that medium is. THR: How perhaps you have seen the significance of story evolve in gaming today? Levi: Getting an excellent narrative is essential because games have become many a lot more like these interactive movies that you simply spend lots of your time and effort with. I believe the Uncharted games did an amazing job at this. The men at Naughty Dog have just ongoing to create a fantastic title. Clearly, Infinity Ward and Treyarch are constantly returning and forth and getting us an enjoyable experience within their first-person world with Cod games. And Bethesda (Softworks) is constantly on the in the ante using the Elder Scrolls games like Oblivion and also the new Skyrim. THR: Since you are overall Chuck, what's next for you personally? Levi: As someone who works in entertainment and it is an enthusiastic gamer, I've got a large amount of ideas. I actually want to begin to make and bridging the space between gaming entertainment and live action entertainment. I wish to begin to make interactive shows where you are watching stars like myself portray figures that, after we get into fight, you may be motivated either to opt-out or opt-directly into manipulating the results of that fight...similar to a choose your adventure. This is where I begin to see the future going. The greater interactive you may make entertainment, as well as providing people with options of passive or active entertainment, the greater. I really like what Kinect does. You do not need a handheld remote control any longer. You may either voice command or wave your hands around and have the ability to make use of whenever and wherever you would like. It's fascinating. THR: Players happen to be streaming content in record amounts online. How can you observe that affecting the way forward for television? Levi: For a long time now, my philosophy continues to be that the television are only a thing for the monitor. It will not be considered a service, always, any longer. Everything will you need to be blocked in, as you are likely to be streaming everything. It is going to open and extremely broaden the field of entertainment for independent entertainment producers to have the ability to basically make whatever they would like to make then sell it straight to their group of followers, which will probably be incredible. If they are making something that's good, people will find it watching it. THR: Exactly what does this suggest for that current prime time television model? Levi: Television will persist within the model that people view it, but increasingly more it is much more about sporting occasions and reality competitions stuff that individuals have to look at live. Being an marketer, increasing numbers of people are DVRing their programming or watching it on the internet, you are not receiving your hard earned money from the advertisement investment, so it is going to alter the model drastically. Biopics fill movie screens this season

'The Iron Lady'The biopic is a Hollywood staple because the beginning of cinema, but the 2010 crop appears particularly bountiful, spotlighting the struggles of creative artists (Melies, Shakespeare, Marilyn Monroe), political energy brokers (J. Edgar Hoover, Margaret Thatcher, Aung San Suu Kyi) and thought leaders (Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung) -- in addition to baseball fashion leader Billy Beane and also the scattering of famous folk one of the casts of "Night time in Paris," "Anonymous" and "W.E."The 4th quarter tends to bring a slew of biographies, which appear to become a inside path to copping large awards: Six of history ten best-actor Oscar those who win and eight of history 12 stars have limned real people. But to film companies, a prize requires a back burner to box office. With multiple entertainment options 24/7 and reality TV thriving, audiences appear to crave details, and biopics ideally mix fascinating tales using the added kick of understanding that the storyline holds true.Oscar races previously couple of years offered tales of real individuals who were not big names, for example "127 Hrs" and "The Blind Side," and also gives experience into politicians who aren't natural subjects for that genre, including "The King's Speech" and "The Social Networking."A lot more than previously, the 2010 roster is heavy with examines well-known people -- a number of whom happen to be portrayed multiple occasions in the past films -- using the position, "You believe you realize a great deal relating to this person, there is however plenty you do not know.InchEach and every biopic should bring a definite perspective, what philosopher Jose Ortega y Gasset known as "something where the contradictions of the human existence are unified." The final factor you would like is a number of heavily investigated "after which Used to do this" moments, inviting the crowd to practically count the scribe's 3x5 research cards shedding on the way.We have observed catalogs of notable occasions before, and "Chaplin," "Amelia" and "Past the Ocean" "Hoffa," "Cobb" have taken the rap for showing stories largely uninflected by interpretation. But a controlling idea can string occasions together inside a compelling way. To author Dustin Lance Black, J. Edgar Hoover seeks the masses' adoration as an alternative for that love that dares not speak its title when Mama Hoover is about, and thus a monster comes into the world. For Christopher Hampton in "A Harmful Method," Jung's puritanical background butts heads together with his patients' pressing sexuality, leading to a nervous breakdown along with a passionate ambition for stopping individuals similarly stricken. "Moneyball's" Billy Beane is really a unsuccessful player who still really wants to influence the overall game, while Georges Melies (per "Hugo") is really a disappointed filmmaker that has abandoned his craft. When the interpretation is within place, you have a range of three structures. The tricky "trees from little acorns" approach finds an excellent life's essence squarely in the earliest years. And "Youthful" is often within the title: "Youthful Mr. Lincoln subsequently." "The Youthful Victoria," "Youthful Tom Edison." (This season, "Youthful Goethe for each otherInch indicates a romance having a free-spirited feminist -- that could be construed as enough to change a carousing wastrel right into a literary giant.)The 2nd and many common framework may be the riskiest. Telling a whole biography "sperm-to-earthworm" permits scribes to shovel in most a common research information inside a pretty much preordained beginning point and finale. But cramming a lot info into a few hrs comes in a cost. Every knock on the door in "Anonymous" carries earth-trembling import.A wise framework device, like George M. Cohan regaling FDR with career yarns in 1942's "Yankee Doodle Dandy," can mitigate the feeling of a existence going together with chronological of a routine. "J. Edgar" includes edgy time-jumps encouraging us to place the pieces together, while an infirm Maggie Thatcher's foggy recollections will be employed to unify "The Iron Lady."Another argument against all-encompassing existence tales may be the ungainliness of these a tool. Most lives aren't resided inside a clean, satisfying trajectory. Scribe and Marilyn Monroe admirer Adrian Hodges confesses, "I had been never drawn to declaring that entire existence, with your a tragic arc: that troubled beginning the truly amazing, brief glorious duration of 'Some Enjoy It Hot' after which that tragic downward curve, everything sordid stuff using the Kennedys."Colin Clark's book "My Week With Marilyn" offered an alternate. "You can tell the entire story of her existence in only that moment," states Hodges. "The couple of times of happiness with him that will help people remember she would be a real lady, no icon, no Andy Warhol portrait."And that is approach No. 3, the "Best Bit." "A Harmful Method" concentrates on two key cases of Freud and Jung that illustrate their decades of labor. Ron Shelton uses Al Stump's article "Ty Cobb's Wild Ten Month Battle to Live" in mind of his biopic "Cobb." Along with a truly canny choice will fool audiences into thinking they have seen everything. "Patton" (1970) barely covers 3 years of Gen. George Patton's lengthy career, but since the script includes the guy at his inspiring best and vindictive worst, it appears to share the overall entirely.Plus there is the entire historic precision question. We all know author Clark never skinny-dipped using the world's most glamorous superstar. Was Shakespeare a real preening, illiterate buffoon who elbowed Ben Jonson taken care of to front for that "Anonymous" Earl of Oxford? Did J. Edgar Hoover really don his mother's dress like a promise of independence upon her dying? And will we even care? It's rare enough to become treated to some hpv warts-and-all portrait filled with interesting occurrences, and a feeling of why that portrait matters. Maybe that you should enough maybe the questions of veracity around the margins just don't matter."What else could you say about anybody?" Marlene Dietrich notoriously asks in "Touch of Evil." "He was some type of a guy." Nail what type of guy or lady the topic was, along with a biopic can soar. However with biopics come bio-hazards. And it is a good time for you to size up them, with Lincoln subsequently, Jackie O. and Natalie Wood browsing the wings, along with a slew of music figures from Sinatra, Liberace and Michael Jackson to Kurt Cobain, John Lennon and Tupac. Janollari says he hopes the show will be a "refreshing look at this modern millennial generation. They live life to the fullest and have pride in their community and their circle of friends."Janollari says there will even be a Jackass element to the show, as these budding adults take part in regional pastimes like mud racing, squirrel hunting and rope swinging. "They are definitely authentic with a capital 'A,'" he says of the show's stars. "These kids have the same kind of issues and goals and desires as we all do. They all want to find true love or have families. They just live in a world that's really different that many of us live in."Summer TV Winner: MTVBuck Wild will include a wide range of kids across the socio-economic strata - from the more well-off kids living "up in the hills" to the working-class kids down "in the holler." MTV could face concerns from some critics or area politicians that Buck Wild might ridicule rural America - a question that past reality shows like UPN's Amish in the City (and CBS' scrapped The Real Beverly Hillbillies) have had to address. But Janollari stresses that the show "is so wholeheartedly not making fun of these kids... they have a great sense of humor, and you're drawn to them and this world." Janollari also notes that Buck Wild executive producers include Parallel Entertainment's J.P. Williams, a West Virginia native who's behind the Blue Collar Comedy tour and the careers of Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy and Bill Engvall.Buck Wild also comes from Zoo Productions (Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?, The Blame Game) and executive producers John Stevens and Barry Poznick.Buck Wild will likely wait to start production until spring, when West Virginia thaws out. That means the show probably won't premiere until late summer or early fall.Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

Penn Condition Game: ESPN Takes High Road in Coverage (Opinion)

What may have been an excellent assault on Penn St. as well as the child-abuse sex scandal including former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was rather handled with taste by ESPN throughout Saturday's broadcast in the school's game against Nebraska.our editor recommendsAshton Kutcher Referred to as 'Idiot,' 'Ignorant' After Tweeting Joe Paterno's Firing Was 'in Poor Taste'Joe Paterno's Weekly Penn St. Press Conference Canceled Among Jerry Sandusky Sex ScandalJoe Paterno Firing Draws Mixed Reaction Around Internet The sports broadcaster addressed the issue in the interviews with new mind coach Tom Bradley and quarterback coach Jay Paterno, boy of ousted mind coach Joe Paterno, but did not overload within the approach. The 84-year-old Paterno, which has stood a effective 46-year training career, was fired Wednesday along with leader Graham Spanier. The move showed up the wake of Sandusky being charged with 40 counts of sexual abuse of youngsters. Paterno remains belittled for neglecting to make contact with government physiques when he was told about possible misconduct by Sandusky nine in the past. STORY: Ashton Kutcher Referred to as 'Idiot,' 'Ignorant' After Tweeting Joe Paterno's Firing Was 'in Poor Taste' USA Today's Michael McCarthy produces that ESPN "shipped effective, nuanced coverage in the school's first game since the explosive child abuse sex scandal that cost coach Joe Paterno his job." McCarthy notes, "ESPN properly saved a camera trained on Penn Condition quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno, within the second he left his parents' where you can him charging in the team bus to repeated shots of him prowling the sideline" and "ESPN's on-air talent properly saved the primary focus where it'll are actually Saturday: the players and coaches within the Nittany Lions and Cornhuskers the sufferers in addition to their families as well as the tough future for your folks in Happy Valley who face years of law suits, scandal coverage and repairing." Penn St. lost the sport 17-14. Halftime shows on others for instance CBS and ABC that have been televising college gridiron games Saturday stated the scandal when verifying game scores but were mostly restrained like ESPN. Bradley told ESPN after the sport, "It absolutely was unequalled, probably inside the good status for college sports what ongoing here. Which we actually grieve for your sufferers, sense sad for your categories of the children. In my opinion they saw students body today, the support they'd for your sufferers as well as the children, that individuals're all here today. Most of the items that ongoing today, it absolutely was about the subject.Inch Paterno mentioned, before turning away in tears, "We've must days inside our lives. I consider yesterday, where i had been sitting as well as the world's kinda switched upside lower. Our children were resilient, In my opinion they'd some real challenges and so they carried out hard. Hammond: AFI Shuts The Lengthy Fall Fest Oscar Circuit Whos On The Top, Who Flopped?

Withlast evening’s conclusion from the annual AFI Fest in Hollywood the curtain finally fell around the 2011 Fall Film Festivals. Therefore the question remains, comes with an Oscar leader emerged after two several weeks about this circuit? AFI was once held early in the year but smartly repositioned itself to November in the past. The functional side advantage of that's the Fest includes a shot at getting an effect on honours season, as well as AFI will get the pick from the litter when it comes to prolific challengers. That strategy has labored again this season, a minimum of when it comes to the planet premiere opening film, Clint EastwoodsJ. Edgar as well as for that closing evening selection, Steven Spielbergs CGI animation contender,The Adventures of Tintin that also made its United States premiere last nightat AFI. Neither of those company directors is always noted for putting his films broadly around the fest circuit however, you cant deny that striking the fests could be a good strategy. The final four Best Picture those who win -No Country For Old Males, Slumdog Uniform, The Hurt Locker, The King’s Speech counseled me major festival gamers, finding their footing around the circuit after which sailing easily into Academy awards heart. This season, likely best pic options that started at one fest or any other range from the Artist, Moneyball, The Descendants, The Ides of March, Night time In Paris and today, J. Edgar. But there's a level bigger number than normal of individuals missing the circuit and seeking other methods to find the Academys attention. That list includes The Lady Using The Dragon Tattoo, War Equine, Very Noisy and extremely Close, Youthful Adult, The Assistance, The Iron Lady andInThe Land of Bloodstream and Honey. Stuck somewhere in the centre is Martin Scorseses Hugo, which attempted to trap the fest wave in the NY Film Festival by featuring a piece happening. The best outcomes of the gambit were mixed opinions toward the film, a minimum of for the reason that form. Then, once the film was completed, Vital missed the chance to exhibit it at AFI and made the decision to visit another direction (simultaneously the Fest happening anywhere) by unveiling it almost concurrently to L.A.-based experts, writers and people from the Academy. Reaction was upbeat and also the film, which opens November. 23rd, has become being spoken about like a Best Picture contender, something which didnt happen after its happening NY screening. For AFI, despite its opener and closer, the relaxation from the selection was mostly dj vu from what bleary-eyed festival goers happen to be seeing during the period of the final two several weeks, a lot of it even imported from last Mays Cannes Film Festival which created its very own significant quantity of challengers, most particularly Night time In Paris, The Tree of Existence, Your Skin My Home Is andcountless other language game titles. Whether some of AFIs non-premiere game titles really affect honours months are an issue mark however it did provide them with a hollywood chance within the town where most voters live. The Festival itself, though, attempts to rival Toronto and Cannes in certain waysfor the greatest and many consistent quantity of red-colored carpet galas. Individuals galas contain movies that apparently havent met a movie festival they didnt like such as the Weinstein CompanysThe Artist (which hit fests large and small since Cannes, winning several audience honours on the way), Oscilloscopes We Have To Discuss Kevin, Lars von TriersMelancholia and also the current king from the circuit, Steve McQueens questionable Shame starring Michael Fassbender. If any film has tips from the devoted fest strategy this year it might be that certain. Beginning in Venice at the begining of September, it required individuals experts by storm and won a Best Actor prize for Fassbender, leading to a sensation that managed to get essential-see when it hit Telluride and Toronto a couple of days later. This is where Fox Searchlight required serious notice and acquired the film regardless of the certainty of the NC-17 rating. Or possibly due to it. Debate rarely hurt and Shame, because of its graphic nudity and sexual character, has superbly ridden the wave. It's anybodys guess though how this can play outdoors the cocoon from the festival trail if this finally opens at the begining of December. This is often stated about lots of 2010's films wishing to translate their festival achievements into boxoffice and Oscar gold. There's no doubt that Michel Hazanavicius charmer, The Artist, is a smash at each fest it's performed, but outdoors of the rarefied world will Harvey Weinstein have the ability to convince regular moviegoers who arent swept up within the intoxicating festival atmosphere to visit view it in the multiplex? Its a black and whitened quiet movie. Festgoers are utilized to the kinds of films that inspired it regular Joes less.Definitely everybody realizes the need for fests for starting movies but what plays around the Croisette, the waterways of Venice, the dusty roads of Telluride or even the cosmopolitan metropolitan areas of Toronto, NY and La is not going to ride to glory ultimately. Possibly that's why Vital, which got stung delivering Jason ReitmansUp Up around the circuit 2 yrs ago simply to see its September glow dim when it had been finally launched in December (even though it did receive major Academy Award nominations including Best Picture), continues to be looking for new ways to demonstrate a number of its challengers. ReitmansYoung Adult with Charlize Theron may have appeared primed for fests. In the end, Reitmans movies notablyJuno andThank You For Smoking had extremely effective fest berths prior to going onto a great deal larger commercial success. But Componen intentionally keptThe Fighter as well as the CoensTrue Grit off that path this past year and both flourished at Oscar time with Best Picture and various other noms, as well as in the situation ofThe Fighter two supporting acting Oscars. When shock rang in blogdom concerning the non-fest technique for Youthful Adult, an advisor explained they would do other fun things, even when this no-fest approach was different things for Jason. Within the last month Vital is doing appear tests, secret showings round the country that generate immediate twitter buzz. It appears to become the brand new factor this honours season. If this designed a visit the brand new Beverly Cinema in L.A. at the outset of November, influential honours writers were asked, loved the things they saw and began shouting Oscar, something Vital is not doing in a overt way up to now. Disney and DreamWorks happen to be doing exactly the same factor for Spielbergs War Equine, creating their very own secret fest circuit in small cities mostly within the Area or places like Bellevue, Washington. Its certainly just one way of remaining within the conversation without needing to perform the sometimes-difficult festival route. Within the situation of both films, it had the preferred effect of having participants to pass through the great word, similar to they are doing within the roads of the film fest immediately after a screening of some hot title. The large problem with doing fests obviously is that if you choose the incorrect venue. Venice, because it works out, might not have been where for Madonnas W.E., that has been attempting to recover since, continues to be tweaked in editing and is able to emerge again for itsOscar qualifyingrunin December and regular runs February 4. Similarly, Carnage, Roman Polanskis adaptation from the Tony winning play, God of Carnage, may have been best missing an italian man , city and heading right to NY where it more effectively performed because the opener from the NYFF. The truth is, The new sony Pictures Classics, that is delivering it, has already established heavy rotation as always in most the festivals and it is a large believer in making use of these to promote its make of movies. It had been difficult to get an autumn Festival without the existence of SPCs selection of the Harmful Method, Footnote, Where Will We Go Ahead Now?, In Darkness, Your Skin My Home Is, A Separation and Carnage (even though latter did skip Telluride and Toronto). The main one indisputable factor about festivals is the free publicity value. Its a method to gather a lot of media in one location and obtain a tsunami of talk going. It may also help if you have a star as ready, willing willing and able as say, George Clooney, who hit Venice withThe Ides of March around the fests opening evening and it has been everywhere with this film. Hes also together with around withThe Descendants by which he stars a title that's possibly the most powerful contender to leave 2010's fest circuit. You cannot buy that type of coverage. And can Oscar voters have your eyes turned or it is possible to better way honours strategists continues to understand more about?

The fine folks at Funny or Die have released a creepy video before Halloween. Inside the clip, actress Chloe Moretz stars as Enid Krysinski also called "the terrifying girl the truth is in each and every frightening movie." The season of radical honours thinking

This seasons hopefuls funnel The Nobleman Speech for kudos inspiration. Variety's annual Honours Season Launch starts on-page 19 today, marking the condition start of kudos season (kinda/sorta/not always -- people happen to be planning campaigns for more than a year, but we just figured today was as good a period of time every to acknowledge it has began). To describe a Passover question: Why honours season different then other award seasons? The optimist inside me states this might be -- needs to be -- yearly of radical rethinking. Within the last few years, there's been many key changes round the kudos scene, as well as the mind of steam could keep building. The pessimist states it won't be easy to affect the DNA. Reasons for hope: Oscar has two occasions formerly three years broken its 66-year tradition of naming only five best picture nominees. Plus, the Governors Honours were spun off, the Oscarcast faster having a month, and will also be moved even earlier. Plans are afoot for electronic voting. Streaming of films is becoming an problem as companies are thinking about getting choices to screeners. Could this function as year that honours voters think outdoors el born area, retaining their "prestige" criteria but reinvigorating the "enjoyment" factor that has been dormant too extended? And could this function as year that AMPAS board people and ABC professionals finally consider major changes for the show? The current format was spectacular if the first demonstrated on tv in 1953. But, uh, occasions have changed. More will probably be mentioned on these subjects inside the several days ahead. The various, many several days ahead. And, yes, I've only been speaking in regards to the Oscars, while you will discover other honours occasions. Many, many, many other honours occasions. But Oscar might be the Alpha male in cuckoo kudosland, if the Academy of motion Picture Arts & Sciences makes changes, everyone else will too. However, a number of things stay: the passion for certain films, the hopes, the excitement which evolve into glassy-eyed numbness and verge-of-tears, wanting-it-will-finish-soon exhaustion. Reading through with the tea leaves Every year, strategists make an effort to develop a formula for fulfillment. Though secret ballots, experts is only able to make guesses, calculating the prior year's wins will be the Rosetta stone that opens all the methods of Academy voters' tastes. A year ago, "The Social MediaInch was winning everything until "King's Speech" won the SAG Honours and continuing its unbroken streak for the Oscar win. Consequently, many honours hopefuls this year works round the supposition that SAG is vital which any film with Kleenex-y uplift features a appealing factor. While not so quick. Indication No. 1: Experts aren't people in the Academy and the other way round. Around bloggers would rather proclaim bellwethers, this is often a very inexact art. Indication No. 2: Tastes change from year upon year. "LOTR: Return in the King" and "Slumdog Uniform" won top honours in the last decade without any single Oscar acting nomination. "Gladiator," "The Departed," "No Country for Old Males" and "The Hurt Locker" were not exactly heartwarmers. The acting in many of individuals was superb but not one of them was an "actors' movie." "The King's Speech" won because it was terrific. Plus it was terrific cuz it was not trying to mimic almost every other movie which is exactly what voters respond to. Rules of engagement There's another annual kudos tradition: Every season, the truly amazing old Academy tries to get tough on campaigning. (The topic is addressed in depth on-page 19 by Variety's new and socko honours editor Christy Grosz.) The Academy is trying to at the same time deal with reality and perception. Can we think people selected for "King's Speech" since they got a free of charge dinner at Chateau Marmont? AMPAS honchos understand that people election for faves, nonetheless they live in fear that authors and consumer-press bloggers might say Oscars might be "bought." Keep things in perspective Another annual tradition: The whole process of honours season will probably be overanalyzed and mocked as if it's another instance of Hollywood egos run amok. Basically, it comes down lower to creativity. But it's be also a period for marketing, networking and business, since some films the ones will increase earnings substantially. Ego stroke? This can be a bonus. As well as the season might be fun, if you're inside the right mood. Really the only real question is the best way to sustain that mood It is therefore official! Honours season has began! Permit the games begin! And let's make sure that for an additional handful of several days, most of us stop using lots of exclamation points! Kermit the Frog Has Done 17 Things Worse Than Living in a Mansion

I was feeling really good about 'The Muppets.' In a world where our possible financial doom seems more and more like a reality every single day -- not to mention all of those pesky wars and natural disasters -- was it too much to ask to let me be happy about one thing? Apparently. Over the last few months, the marketing has constantly brought a smile to my face and, boy, does Jason Segel ever look like he's having the time of his life with this project. Every interview I read of his (including my own for Vanity Fair) the guy just oozes Muppets. So, what was there not to like? Enter: Frank Oz. To Oz's credit, at least he's got the balls to go on the record with his own name about his displeasure with Jason Segel's version of 'The Muppets,' unlike some other Muppeteers. "I wasn't happy with the script. I don't think they respected the characters," he told the British site Metro. What really stings about this situation is how much I admire Oz -- he brought Yoda to life, for Christ's sake! -- but this just sounds like Oz being a sourpuss. Oh, yeah, that's his own word" "But I don't want to go on about it like a sourpuss," he said. OK, then! At least he admits it! But these other unnamed sources go on to complain about unrealistic plot points, which include Kermit living in a mansion. Actually, that seems to be the main complaint: "Kermit would never live in a mansion, as he does in this movie." So, let me get this straight: The beef with Segel's 'The Muppets' is that plot point, which is so unrealistic that it "creates a false history that the characters were forced to act out for the sake of this movie," according to one of the sources. Right. So, Kermit would never, ever live in a mansion, but based on past films and television shows, Kermit would: · Throw pies into the faces of other Muppets and humans. · Take on the identity of Captain Abraham Smollett · Become a Broadway star · Become a news reporter who is also, inexplicably, identical twin brothers with a bear. · Drive a Studebaker across the country. · Become engaged to a pig. · Become bitterly jealous of Peter Ustinov's talents. · Become bitterly jealous of the Christopher Reeve's looks · On more than one occasion, cancel Fozzie's comedy act -- the one thing Fozzie loves in this world. · Visit the Planet Koozebane · Argue with a Moose who talks like John Wayne. · Force poor Fozzie to do all of the stagehand work because of a simple misunderstanding in which Fozzie sent all the stagehands into the country. · Call Beauregard "an idiot" because of a simple misunderstanding involving some confusion over elbow grease versus axel grease. · Fire singing duo Wayne and Wanda. · Throw out Mark Hamill as host after not liking the way he sings. · Trick poor Gene Kelly into performing, when all the dancing legend wanted to do was watch the show. · Fire the love of his life, Miss Piggy So, yeah, guess what: Kermit's history is laced with ridiculousness and prickliness -- but, right, he would never live in a mansion. Give me a break. [Photo: Paramount] You can contact Mike Ryan directly on Twitter. Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook RELATED

Bryan Singer ponders Starbuck's sex in Battlestar Galactica movie

With Excalibur canned, we all know that Bryan Singer's next project after Jack The Giant Killer is a giant screen version of Battlestar Galactica. What we should have no idea without a doubt is exactly what his Galactica movie uses since it's influence.Does it lean for the original seventies Television show - as Singer has formerly recommended - or funnel the gritty drama from the up-to-date, newer television outing?A job interview with film writer John Orloff (Anonymous) has not shed much light on that decision."I've got a pretty radical take," Orloff told The La Occasions, before adding. "Don't be concerned, I am not gonna frak up.InchAnother large real question is whether Starbuck ought to be performed with a male (think Dirk Benedict within the original Glen A. Larson Television show) or perhaps a female (Katie Sackoff within the update)?SFX magazine sprang this burning question to Singer, who states the jury continues to be out."At this time I've not made my thoughts on that. But whatever approach we take to go, I am sure it will likely be complementary towards the whole Battlestar Galactica mythology," he dodged.

Successor tops Iger to-do list

IgerNow that he is set to remain at the top of the Walt Disney Co. through 2016, Bob Iger can start focusing on his five-year plan.High up on his to-do list is picking a successor. Many inside the Mouse House consider the job to be Tom Staggs' to lose.Since becoming chairman of the company's theme parks and resorts group in 2009, Staggs has presided over the division's largest expansion in years. It includes the $1 billion makeover of Anaheim's California Adventure; the first major overhaul of Fantasyland inside Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom since it opened in 1971; the addition of an "Avatar"-themed land at Animal Kingdom, also in Orlando; the launch of new cruise ships in its fleet; the opening of a Hawaiian resort; and the $4.4 billion construction of Shanghai Disneyland. That park is set to open in 2016, just as Iger is set to hand over the reins. The venture has been one of his pet projects: Disney's sixth park in the world will provide the company with a lucrative way to capitalize on growing leisure travel in China.Staggs had previously served as Disney's chief financial officer (he's climbed the ranks since 1990) but moved over to the parks division when Iger wanted him to switch posts with Jay Rasulo in order to gain more operational experience. Before making the move, Staggs was instrumental in helping Iger acquire Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion.Staggs has recently undertaken a charm offensive as he's stepped up to serve as the face of the company -- a role in which he seems comfortable -- while giving presentations at Disney's D23 Expo in Anaheim in August and while introducing revamps of "Star Tours" and new rides at California Adventure. But Rasulo shouldn't be counted out of the running just yet. The theme park vet has gained respect on Wall Street as CFO since 2009 and helped grow the company overseas. He joined the Mouse House in 1986 as director, strategic planning and development.Other candidates include Anne Sweeney, co-chair of Disney's media networks group, the company's biggest moneymaker, and president of Disney-ABC Television Group. Studio chairman Rich Ross may also be a contender, but the former Disney Channel topper has his hands full at the moment as he tries to overhaul Disney's film biz.Although bizzers are sure to obsess over the succession issue, Iger has more on his plate in the coming years than mulling over the candidates to replace him.In addition to investing heavily in Disney's parks group, Iger is in the midst of making big changes to the company's overseas operations, and like every other showbiz CEO he is navigating its move into the era of digital distribution, particularly as it pertains to VOD and homevid. He has earned praise as a risk-taker for embracing new platforms like Apple's iTunes, iPod and iPad but has also raised the ire of exhibitors for wanting to drastically shorten theatrical release windows.Iger is not adverse to shakeups within the Mouse, as evidenced in the Staggs-Rasulo job swap in 2009, choosing Ross to head up the film studio and moving homevideo vet Bob Chapek into posts where he first overhauled the studio's theatrical biz and now heads up consumer products. As he pushes Ross to make more Disney-branded films that can spin off sequels and tie-ins that the rest of the company can take advantage of (especially Marvel's superhero pics and Pixar's toons), Iger is still intent on making the company's games group profitable by 2013; it's switched gears to focus on making games for social networks and mobile platforms.Iger has said he's not opposed to improving the bottom line through acquisitions. Early in his tenure as CEO he orchestrated the Pixar acquisition, and he surprised the biz with his stealth purchase of Marvel in 2009. Iger also acquired social game developer Playdom last year and put its exec in charge of the Mouse's interactive arm.Under the terms of the five-year employment contract Disney revealed Friday, Iger, who has served as prexy and CEO since 2005, will become chairman and CEO at the Mouse's annual shareholders meeting in March, when current chairman John Pepper is to retire. By 2015, when the new CEO is set, he'll transition to a 15-month period as exec chairman, ending June 30, 2016. After that, Iger is expected to retire from Disney. His new contract will pay him $2.5 million a year, up $500,000 from his previous contract. For three years he will also receive an incentive bonus of $12 million, based on the company's operating income, cash flow and earnings per share, while he's eligible for another $15.5 million in stock options. The bonus and stock options drop to $6 million in 2015, once Iger becomes executive chairman.Last year, Iger earned $28 million in salary, bonus and other awards, according to proxy filings.(Cynthia Littleton contributed to this report.) Shania Twain Testifies Against Accused Stalker

TORONTO, ONT -- Canadian country star Shania Twain testified Friday that she has compassion for a man accused of stalking her but remains concerned that he will continue to pursue her. Giovanni Palumbo has been charged with three counts of failure to comply with a court order and criminal harassment. He pleaded guilty Friday to the charges after pleading not guilty earlier this week. The former Ottawa doctor allegedly sent Twain a series of letters, made unwanted visits to her family cottage in Ontario and even attended her grandmothers funeral before being arrested at a Canadian awards ceremony this year. Defense lawyer Gary Barnes said Friday during Twains cross-examination that Palumbo simply didnt realize that Twain wasnt interested. But Twain, appearing via video link from an undisclosed location in Europe, didnt see it that way. Im torn emotionally because I have compassion for anybody whos reaching out in need fans often do that, she said. I feel very sad and awkward having to go through these very personal matters with Mr. Palumbo because its such an invasion of his privacy. However, Twain said nothing she heard at the trial made her feel differently about Palumbo. I still have the fear and anxiety of being contacted in the future by Mr. Palumbo. And I do want it to stop, she said. For the second day in a row, the process seemed to become too much for Palumbo, who was clad on Friday in a rumpled black suit and navy slip-on sneakers. Twain was recounting the contents of numerous letters allegedly sent to her by Palumbo when the former doctor leapt to his feet and addressed the court loudly. But I didnt know you received any of them you understand? yelled Palumbo, alluding to why he persisted in corresponding with Twain. It is very emotional for everybody, Palumbo said, addressing the judge. Please understand I have emotions, very strong emotions. On Thursday, Palumbo had a similar outburst declaring: Eilleen, you can trust me, Im going to plead guilty. Twains real first name is Eilleen. Copyright 2011 by Associated Press. Twenty Cigarettes Might Be the Best Movie Ever

“I wanted to do a portrait film with extended takes. Smoking came into it later, as the ploy to get people to stand still and not be totally conscious of being filmed, although a big part of Twenty Cigarettes is that very self-consciousness of a person in front of a camera and how that changes over time. Cigarettes also have this built-in duration and people will smoke at a different rate, and they’ll smoke the whole cigarette or part of the cigarette. Smoking has such a stigma now, especially in the U.S., so I thought it would be interesting to make a film where I won’t have any value judgment at all on smoking.” Sorry! This has NC-17 written allllll over it. [NYT] [Photo: TIFF]
